Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2016 – Day 0

The much awaited Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2016 kicked off to a grand show by Tarun Tahiliani along with Kangana Ranaut, as his showstopper. Tahiliani showcased his ready to wear collection inspired by sculptor Mrinalini Mukherjee’s life size hemp and cast bronze sculptures.
Here is the break down to this magnificent Winter Festive 2016 collection.

Designs – The collection consisted of organic motifs and abstract designs. Graphic textures and shading was the key to create a 3D feel on a digitally printed fabric, solely to give depth to the design and still keep the garment light and playful. Fringe was huge in his designs, from hemlines and sleeves to shoulders, tassels and fringes were seen on almost all of the pieces.
Garments – The collection consisted of kurtas, dhotis, kaftans, tunics, concept saris, shift dresses.
Silhouettes – Indian wear silhouettes with modern touches like cowls and capes.
Fabrics –  The collection was made of light, easy and breathable fabrics as the outfits cater to a no-nonsense style and comfort. The fabrics used were mostly jersey and textures in chanderi, soft net, Italian tulle, crepe georgette, micro pleated tulle and heavy crepe georgette.
Drapes – Ensembles using drapes such as cascades, cowl drapes and capes to showcase it’s elegance and fluidity.
Color palette – Celebrates earthy autumnal colors like cobalt blue, ravishing red, rust, deep olive, and charcoal
Textures – Tahiliani plays with textures in the form of woven textiles, embroidery, fringing, crochet, and prints that looked 3D, creating the illusion of texture.
Beauty – Experimented with the trendy glittery lips.

Enjoy this collage of my most adorned pieces from the collection!

Pop, lock and crop it

It may seem like it is the end for the cropped top and high waist bottom combo; but in my closet, they are here to stay! I love this combination for more than one reason. If you have a petite frame like mine, it does wonders for highlighting my waist! I put this look together for a casual day out, but you can also wear it on a night out if you decide to style it up with jewellery and the right accessories.  I purchased this top from the streets of Mumbai for just INR 250 along with these lace shorts that I thrift-ed from the streets of Bangkok. I wore neutral heels along with a clutch which brought my look together. A little bit of bling on my wrist and ears was all I needed to amp up the look and look stylish. Such quick and effortless ways of bringing a look together is what keeps me looking stylish on busy days.

Booted

“Nothings haunts you more than the things you didn’t buy.”

Mumbai rains are the worst for commuters travelling long distances. This topic holds dear to my heart, especially because I have to travel over great distances through out the school year. This year though, I was bent on making my trip a little more pleasant. No longer was I going to let the dirt, mud and potholes loitering around khargar station ruin my only good pair of jeans. What I needed were the perfect boots. Ideally of course the Burberry boots showcased behind the glass windows of Palladium mall would have done just fine. But as you know, not everyone can afford such lavish luxuries. Hence, what I needed were a cheap, light, and versatile pair that can truly stand toe deep with the best of them! After searching all over Mumbai, scanning ample of shopping website and asking a ton of my shopaholic friends, I finally found what I was looking for.

These boots are from Sole to Soul in Bandra and I bought them for INR 2600. Now of course, my avid viewers might be questioning the large sum of money I paid for boots. After all, this is LIVEMODISH, the website where cheap and accessible items can be accessorised, to make any look fashionable. But the way I see it- some things as important as boots, are a great investment. With their sturdy, yet stylish look- I can rock these bad boys for a few more seasons.

In regards to today’s post, I paired up my new boots with my favourite printed jeans that I recently purchased from Central Mall during the end of season sale. I found this “long” cropped top which works perfectly fine with my monochrome look. As for my hair, I thank god for my spontaneity (or lack of impulse) when I decided to cut my hair short. Not only have I not needed to battle frizzy hair, but my hair tends to curl itself the minute I walk out the door.

Oscars 2014 – Best Dressed Women

What do you get when you combine Jenifer Lawrence’s clumsiness (two years in a row!) with a pizza guy serving slices to celebrities (with the help of Brad Pitt) to a star studded selfie that broke twitter? You get the 86th Academy Awards hosted by the talented Ellen Degeneres :D. This night was all about the glamour, celebrity status and most importantly fashion. That’s right people, this is the second edition of the ‘best dressed on the red carpet’- Women edition.

Our first star lost the award to Cate Blanchett, but she definitely won the red carpet award
for her navy blue strapless Gucci gown and ruby earrings. That’s right; I’m talking about the gorgeous Amy Adams, star of the blockbuster film American Hustle.

Oscars 2014 Amy Adams

Another star that lost out on her best actress nomination was the Gravity star Sandra Bullock. Her down to earth colour scheme (see what I did there 😉 ) was quite similar to Amy Adams’ dress. Her gown was designed by Alexander McQueen.

With the impeccable neckline, Charlize Theron stunned everyone in her Dior Haute Couture ensemble.

As avid readers of Livemodish will know- I am a huge fan of peplums! So Jennifer Lawrence had to make my best dressed list for her reddish orange hot Dior number.  Her look came together by adding her diamond encrusted necklace worn backwards followed by her stylish hairdo that was quite soothing for the eyes.

Oscar 2014 Jennifer Lawrence

Angelina Jolie looked sensational in an embellished Ellie Saab.

oscars 2014 angelina-jolie.

Anne Hathaway almost blinded half the audience with her metallic and black Gucci gown.
I must say that the bling was overdone (to say the least).

Oscars 2014 Anne-Hathway

Lupita Nyongo‘s personality outshined everyone I saw on the red carpet. No matter what everyone else wore, her immaculate smile warmed the hearts of millions of fans all around the world- especially when she won her first Oscar on debut! But to be fair, her red cape dress from the golden globes was far better than the Prada number she had on.
Nevertheless she did pull off the powdery princess like dress with her cute little hairband.

Overall, I must say, this year the men outshined women when it came to fashion
(as seen here) the color pellette was too formal with minimal accessories and relaxed hair.
In general, hardly a few looks were exciting. This could be the result of the nature of the
Oscars (being a classy formal event and all). Nevertheless it was worth waking up at
5:30 am and missing class in the process :D)

Oscars 2014 – Best Dressed Men

How great were the Oscars? Could Ellen have done a better job? Who knows, but what I am certain about is the fact that the Academy awards is not simply a night of awards and presentations but rather a pageantry and celebration of song numbers, film cinema and my favourite, fashion! That’s right, this blog post is all about the well dressed men who groomed and glimmered their way onto the red carpet, with the sharpest pair of tuxedos this side of Italy has to offer. Let us begin 😀

First up, we have the dashing Bradley Cooper.  Bradley Cooper is all about the Tom Ford. Its’ signature wide lapels are distinguishable among the great fashion designers. As the great philosopher, Jay Z once put it “I don’t pop molly, I rock Tom Ford”.

Another Tom Ford classic, this time won by the scruffy Michael Fassbender. His role in 12 years a slave not only got him nominated for best supporting actor, but he definitely made my cut in this years ‘best dressed man’. What separates his look from the pack is his old Hollywood-style-shawl-collar tux, which contrasted well with his rugged but groomed beard.

If you think the first two look good, you haven’t seen anything yet. Might be premature for me to say, but my favourite outfit of the night was worn by none other then the vice president of the United States , Francis Underwood (#shamelesshouseofcardsplug, #notmakinganythingoutofit, #uthemanspacey) aka Kevin Spacey. If anyone knows how to rock Burberry on the red carpet it’s this man. The blue tux contrasted with the black lapels and black bow tie, which brought the look together beautifully!

Thor himself could not design a better tux then what Chris Hemsworth has on.  This brilliant tux was crafted by none other than David August. The contrasting effect of maroon black and white is immaculately draped in all its beauty. Well done indeed!

Chris-Hemsworth

What can I say about Jared Leto. His immaculate performance in Dallas Buyers Club bought him his first Oscar (lets be honest, no one came close). One more praise for Jared Leto is his bold move to wear white in a sea of black and dark shades. A white diner jacket is a welcome change from the standard Oscar tux but this man pushed it one step further with his red silk bow tie and the cant-be-seen crystal ecrusted studs. Leto was draped in a Saint Laurent tux, while his bow tie was made by Monsieur Jean Yves.

Finally my favourite homie of the night, ( he is not an actor) the very talented singer-songwriter, rapper, record producer, drummer and fashion designer, Pharrell Williams. Yes sir, if anyone deserves a standing ovation it is this man. Not only did he make the crowd ‘Happy’, but he looked good singing it as well. The most daring outfit of the night has to go to him for obvious reasons. His flawless looking tuxedo was definitely the talk of the night…or not really 😛 No, only Pharrell could pull of Bermuda shorts and a tux on the red carpet. On a side note, anyone know where u can get those red shoes from? Ebay maybe?

Well there you have it, my list of the best-dressed men at the 86TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS (not in any particular order), until next time.

Peace,
Jahan Italia.

In Print

Prints are an easy way out if you are confused on how to style simple pieces of clothing. There are certain prints which speak volumes and saves you from the hasel of spending hours on getting the perfect outfit combination. Here are a few prints you can easily wear with monotone clothes and still make a statement.

CHEVRON

Chevron is a V- shaped pattern. When you combine the V- shaped pattern it looks like a zig zag. In the earlier days the chevron was awarded to a knight to show he had taken part in capturing a castle, town or other building, of which the chevron resembled the roofs. It was also employed as a badge of honor to mark the main supporters of the head of the clan or “top of the house.” Charles Schulz’s the famous author used his beloved  comic character Charlie Brown in order to support a Chevron design on his sweater for nearly 50 years and in the late 1960 fashion designer Pierre Cardin popularized the chevron print in his clothing.

1

TARTAN

Tartan is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. This forms visible diagonal lines where different colours cross. Tartan give the appearance of new colours blended from the original ones. The resulting blocks of colour repeat vertically and horizontally in a distinctive pattern of squares and lines. Tartans originated in woven wool, but now they are made in many other materials. Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland and it is popularly known as plaid in North America.

4

AZTEC

Aztec originates from Mexico and was influenced by a long history of tribes. Traditionally, the art prints reflected the appreciation for insects, birds, fish and animals. But in modern times it primarily constists of zig-zag lines which are then modified to come up with varying patterns. Modern aztec fashion wear & accessories are much more structured and flashy. They use big think lines, complex geometrical shapes and multiple colors.

?????

HOUNDSTOOTH

Houndstooth  also known as dog’s tooth, is a pattern characterized by broken checks or abstract four-pointed shapes, often in black and white. The classic houndstooth pattern is an example of  tessellation.  Houndstooth checks originated in woven wool cloth of the Scottish Lowlands, but are now used in many other materials.

Monsoon Must-Haves

Here is a list of the top 5 must-have items during the monsoon season.

Bright Umbrella – “Now that it’s raining more than ever, Know that we’ll still have each other, You can stand under my umbrella, Ella ella, eh eh eh.” Oh yeah, Rihanna gave us another reason to pay attention to umbrellas :p.When it comes to my own umbrellas I usually misplace them very often so I tend to buy two or three at the same time. Prints, neons, and clear umbrella’s are the thing to look out for this season. It’s cool that your umbrella protects you from the rain..but do you really wanna be the dull conformist who blends in with the prototypical black umbrella, or do you wanna stand out like the unique and confident individual you are!1

Waterproof makeup – Leave behind the running mascaras and smudgy kohl, rather go for bright hues for your eyes. Apply cream based eye shadows that are water proof and easy to use. You can also choose to go for a bold hue for your lips instead of eyes. Don’t forget your perfume. We all love to smell delicious, no matter what season it is! Floral, fruity or citrus are just perfect for the rainy days.

2

Hair serum – My hair is always frizzy during the monsoon season. I use the Matrix hair serum after every hair wash as it keeps my hair shiny and frizz-free all day long. If hair serums are not your thing then tie your hair up in pretty hair styles like buns, braids, or even a simple pony tail.

3

Clear bags – Bags with clear panel with a hint of neon finishing is definitely on my must-have list this season. They are water proof, so it is a perfect go-to bag this season. But just make sure you carry appropriate things in your bag ladies..if its that time of the month its best you leave your sanitary items at home or in a concealed case :p

4

Plastic footwear – Flip flop: opt for plastic slippers this season in neon shades. The bright colors and comfort is all you need to make a fashion statement and enjoy the rains at the same time. Boots: you can happily splash around town without worry with bright rain boots, gum boots and printed wellies. The best boots I recommend are the calf length boots because knee length boots will make you feel sticky with the humidity in the air and ankle lengths may cause the water to go inside them.

5

Have a happy and safe monsoon this year!
